Domestic Abuse & Violence

If you're the victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is, you must report it to the police and the courts, who may issue a restraining order order or incarcarate the abuser. The most important thing is to NOT remain silent.

  1. Gather information. Jot down the time, address or place, and as much detailed information as possible.
  2. Call 911 while it is happening if possible. Describe the situation as clearly as possible to the operator. If you are the victim, attempt to find a safe place to wait until the police arrive.
  3. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233 or online at http://www.thehotline.org to report the abuse.
  4. Visit the Web site for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at http://www.ncadv.org to find support groups for domestic violence victims in your area as well as additional resources to help you heal.
  5. Seek counseling from an accredited psychologist. Ensure that they have experience counseling victims of domestic violence before visiting them.
