Domestic Abuse & Violence
If you're the victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is, you must report it to the police and the courts, who may issue a restraining order order or incarcarate the abuser. The most important thing is to NOT remain silent.
- Gather information. Jot down the time, address or place, and as much detailed information as possible.
- Call 911 while it is happening if possible. Describe the situation as clearly as possible to the operator. If you are the victim, attempt to find a safe place to wait until the police arrive.
- Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-7233 or online at http://www.thehotline.org to report the abuse.
- Visit the Web site for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at http://www.ncadv.org to find support groups for domestic violence victims in your area as well as additional resources to help you heal.
- Seek counseling from an accredited psychologist. Ensure that they have experience counseling victims of domestic violence before visiting them.
